      Video Review & Installation

Hey guys, I'm Eric with ExtremeTerrain. Today, we're checking out these RedRock 4x4 3-Inch Side Step Bars in Gloss Black, fitting all 2007 and later Toyota Tundras with the CrewMax cab. You should really be checking these out if you're looking for a more affordable option to make getting in and out of your Tundra a lot easier. Now, if your Tundra didn't come with any side steps or running boards from the factory, and a lot of them don't, getting in and out of your truck can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, especially if you already have a lift added, or if physically it's a challenge for you. Now, these side steps from RedRock 4x4 are a very affordable solution to make that a lot easier. Now, another nice aspect to the design of these side steps is the step pads there. They have this kind of gridded tread to them that is gonna give you a lot of added traction if you are in snowy, wet, or muddy conditions, that's gonna give a place for all that material to go as you're stepping up onto the side step and getting into your truck. Now, these side steps aren't just all about function, they're also about style as well. This particular set comes in gloss black, which I think matches up really well with our truck, in particular. We have these aftermarket wheels that are glossy black, and that's a nice pairing. And I think that gives a more finished look to your truck, especially if your truck didn't come with anything from the factory. Now, as far as price goes, guys, these are currently coming in right around $250. That puts them at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to the running boards and side steps that are out there on the market right now, making them a very affordable option. And that's really attractive also if you are replacing maybe a set of damaged side steps or running boards that you already have in your truck. You're not spending money again on something you might've spent money on in the past, that affordable option is really nice. Now the mild steel construction that comes with this is coated in a two-stage epoxy pre-coating, and then it's finished in a black gloss powder coat. Gives it a nice, finished appearance, and I think the design of these side steps is kind of sportier, kind of goes well with, especially the TRD sport model like we have on our Tundra right here. As far as the installation goes, I'm giving it a very soft two out of three wrenches in our difficulty meter. It gets a little tricky kind of lining things up and you have to get your fitment just right because the bolts go into very precise holes in the side steps. And I'll talk more about that in just a minute. Overall, give yourself two hours at most start to finish to get this job done. So let's take a look at the tools you're gonna need and get started with the installation. All right, guys, real basic, the tools we're gonna need, an electric impact wrench and a 1/2-inch socket. All right, guys, now before we get into the installation, just a couple of things I want to point out. The Tundra has four factory mounting points. If you have running boards that come from the factory, they use all four mounting points with brackets and basically two bolts at each position. Pretty much the same thing here with our new RedRock 4x4 kit, we're only going to be using three of those positions, however, and two bolts at each. And there's gonna be a bracket for each one, and each bracket is specific to each position. And they're gonna be stamped right on the side. Now I have the front one here and it's the most different based on the spacing of the threaded holes on the underside of your truck, but they're gonna be stamped. And this one's stamped DF for driver front, and you've got DC for driver center, and then DR for driver rear. And then you're going to have corresponding stampings for the passenger side that begin with the letter P. So basically, that's gonna tell you where each bracket goes on your truck. The other thing I wanna point out is if you are installing these and you don't already have running boards coming off of your truck, make sure you clean out the threaded holes on the underside. Make sure there's no mud or dirt or rust or anything else, any other debris that's up in there that could cause you to cross a thread and ruin the bolt that comes in the kit. That would be a real headache for you during this installation. So other than that, we're gonna go ahead with this, and let's get started. All right, guys, now we're at the front here with our DF bracket. Go ahead and grab these two bolts. The ones that have the lock washer and flat washer already mounted on them. These are the bolts we're gonna use to attach these brackets to the underside of our truck. I'm gonna tighten these down right now. We may need to loosen them up later if fitment or we need to properly align something. I get there are holes to line up, but right now, I'm going to tighten these up using a 1/2-inch socket. All right, guys, now here we're at the second position back from the front of the truck here with our DC bracket. All right, guys, here at the last position here with a DR bracket. All right, guys, one quick thing I wanna just mention here before we actually get the side step mounted onto the truck here is that you'll notice that our two frontmost brackets are closer together. And the third bracket has a little bit of distance between the middle bracket, and that's gonna correspond with your side step. These are side-specific, obviously. So you're gonna wanna grab the one where these two are closer together, and that's gonna orient to the front. No big deal. It's something pretty easy to figure out. And the only thing I recommend too is if you're doing this by yourself, you might want a box or something like that. I'm gonna be using a wooden crate to kind of hold up one end close to the bracket back there. These brackets are kind of curved and they don't really allow you to just kinda rest the step there while you're working on it...pretty good chance it's gonna fall off if you try to do that. And if you're laying on your back underneath this thing, you don't want this thing falling off and whacking your face. So I'm gonna use an apple crate there to suspend the one end. The one nice thing about these though, is that while they are very sturdy, they're also very light and very easy to manipulate. So as I'm working up at the one end, I'm just gonna hold it up with one hand and we'll get the bolts started directly into the brackets. You have these threaded holes right here, and it makes it pretty easy to bolt these directly to the bracket. So let's go ahead and get started. All right, guys, now using these bolts out of the kit, you're gonna have to put on the lock washer and flat washer yourself. Let's go ahead and get these started. Now I've worked with this style of a side step before on other vehicles, and I fully recommend that you just start these by hand first and do that for all three brackets before you tighten anything down because sometimes alignment can be a little tricky with these because it has to be fairly precise. All right, guys, now once you get them all started, go ahead and tighten them down. You're gonna need a 1/2-inch socket for these as well. All right, guys, now that we have our driver side installed, go ahead and repeat all the same steps on the passenger side. It's pretty much a mirror installation on that side as well. And that wraps up this review and install of this RedRock 4x4 3-Inch Side Step Bars in Black for all 2007 and later Toyota Tundras with the CrewMax cab. And for all things Tundra, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
