Eric: Hey, guys. I'm Eric with ExtremeTerrain. So, today, we're reviewing and installing these MSD Blaster Series Ignition Coils in Red, fitting all 2012 to 2016 JK Wranglers with the 3.6-liter V6 engine. Are you experiencing hard-starting issues, backfiring, misfires, or stalling with your V6 engine? Now, one or more of those issues can be a sign of worn-out or damaged ignition coils. And this high-quality kit from MSD is an affordable solution to any or all of those issues. Now, basically stated, ignition coils transform voltage from your car's battery into the thousands of volts needed to create the spark generated by your engine spark plugs. And these coils plug directly onto the spark plugs, and that's a design referred to as direct ignition or coil-on-plug, and it's the most common in modern ignition systems. Now, what happened to your coils to cause some or all of those issues I just mentioned a moment ago?Well, worn-out spark plugs, overheating, and moisture are some of the leading causes of coil malfunctions. Over time, spark plugs wear out, or the gap at the spark end becomes too large, and that causes the coil to work harder, leading to overheating, and the eventual breakdown of the coil itself. Now, I would definitely recommend replacing or at least checking your spark plugs as part of this job, if you haven't done that already. Now, sold as a pack of six, these premium-quality MSD Blaster Series ignition coils come in right around $225. Now, I did a little internet shopping in preparation for this video, and found that that is a very competitive price, that beats most name brands available for sale right now. Now, as far as the installation goes, like I said, these plug in without too much hassle whatsoever, in about an hour's time, from start to finish. That earns a base of one out of three wrenches on our difficulty scale. But with that said, let's take a look at this clip provided to us from an ExtremeTerrain customer, demonstrating how to swap out your old, worn-out coils for these new MSD blasters.Man: Okay. These are the tools that I used today to replace the ignition coils, the MSD Blaster coils. You could pretty much use just these basic tools, the 10-millimeter wrench, three-eighths ratchet, an 8-millimeter socket, 10-millimeter socket, the swivel. And then, I used these two extensions for different lengths to reach, because I was also replacing my spark plugs today, and a flathead screwdriver. The other tools that came in really handy was the pry bar that wedged the hoses out of the way, this little pry tool for the factory clips, and then this is just a little quick speed tool for taking the clamps off, and then a torque wrench, and a quarter-inch wrench for little, tight spots. In addition to them, when I was putting everything back together, it's nice having the magnetic tray to keep all my screws in, some carb cleaner, a pair of pliers, 13-millimeter wrench, and 14-millimeter, and a 12-millimeter, and then a little short extension. And then I use my drive, impact drive.So, first thing you wanna do is start with disconnecting the battery terminal, at least the negative. Since we are working with electronics, the ignition and throttle body, I always keep that disconnected, and I'll start that with a 10-millimeter socket. Okay. Since the cable on your negative battery terminal is short, kind of hard to tuck out of the way, I usually just stuff a little rag underneath it, right back there, and that way, when we get to the rest, we'll be able to not worry about it touching the battery. Next thing we're gonna do is take off the engine cover. Set that aside. When you take apart the Jeep, there's gonna be a lot of bolts and parts and pieces. It's always good to have a space where you can lay them out in order. And then when it goes back to putting it back together, you can start from that order back, and just trace your way back. So, now, we're gonna go and remove the factory intake box and filter.I have a wrench. I think this is an 8-millimeter. Or you can use a flathead screwdriver, loosen the clamps. This, again, also, you could just remove the duct, if you're not replacing your intake, but because I'm gonna be replacing this with a cold air, I'm gonna remove the whole box and factory filter. Also, there's two bolts right here that attach to the radiator. We wanna remove those. 10-millimeter socket. Duct clamp. Bolt here. There's one here. Loosen those, and then these two bolts at the radiator shroud, we're gonna finish removing those. Set those aside. If you have a cup or a magnetic tray, that's always good to keep that in there. Now, once we get this disconnected, there's gonna be a clip underneath that air intake sensor. You wanna squeeze that tab, and then pull. Okay. I'm gonna set this aside, then take off the box. This is all popped in. Should be able to pull hose off, haul that out, and set it aside.Okay. We're gonna push that red tab back, and then squeeze in and remove that plug. This also has a clip to the throttle body. We wanna remove the clip. There's some little factory clips. We're gonna be pulling those out so the harness will come out. Let's see. We've got one, two, and then another sensor. We'll pull that out, and I'll get those out with this little tool here. Pry. I've seen some people say you could use a flathead if you don't have this tool. So, just save the clip, usually. Okay. That should be all I need to remove that. Okay. We're gonna take the hoses off the throttle body. Sometimes those need just a little pry. Okay, and the hose is off. Okay. Now, we're gonna be removing some bolts off of the intake. We have some nuts on this side. There's four, two here, and two right here. And then over on this side, I think there's several. Let's see. We've got one, two, three, four in the back, and then three on top. We also wanna remove all this clip. So, with that same tool, I'll pry this foam cover. Two clips up here.And if this is in the way, you can take these off. Actually, I think I will remove them to get to that bolt back there. So, these are same as the [inaudible 00:09:23] bolts [inaudible 00:09:26]. [inaudible 00:09:41] easier to get that foam piece out. Heat shield. Okay. After removing those clips and foam, now I'm gonna go ahead and take off the throttle body, the upper part of the throttle body, with these bolts. I'm gonna use an 8-millimeter socket to remove those. You can use, and I recommend using a ratchet to loosen them, and then take them off. I'm gonna go ahead and use my ratchet, my drive, to pull these out, but don't recommend putting them back with this, because you want to get them [inaudible 00:10:37] so you don't overtighten them. [inaudible 00:10:54]. Can you film back here? Show them where these first six are. You've got one, two, three, four, five, six, and then there's a seven in the back. You'll need a type of a swivel socket for that one to get it out. So, I put that one on here because it's kind of back behind the... Okay. We've got those four shorter, and three long on top.These actually have the torque setting on the plastic shroud at seven to nine nanometers, I think it is, which is very, very light. So, I'm going to put these back. Okay. Next, I'm gonna take these four nuts off on this side. Then, over here on the left side, there's a bracket that holds your condenser, your AC lines. We're gonna need to remove the two screws over here, and two nuts on this side, which hold the line to loosen that bracket. If you can zoom in over here, on the clip, I'll show you this bracket will be in the way, and it has a little tab on it. So, we'll pull these bolts and these two nuts, so that we can lift this bracket up, move it back, and then we're gonna take the intake and push, and then lift out. That way, we don't have to remove everything else. Okay. So, I'm gonna get to that using a wrench, 10-millimeter. Take the nuts off. Okay. I'm gonna remove the other two nuts. Okay. On this side over here, I'm gonna use the 10-millimeter socket swivel to get those two bolts, and then the two nuts, so that I can loosen that bracket.Before I go, I wanna remove this hose here from... Okay. I'm gonna go back with this and remove the hose off of the intake. Okay. Push that out of the way. I'm gonna remove these two nuts and these two bolts, so take these off. Now, these two bolts, which are on this side, they're kind of hidden, but behind this wire loom [inaudible 00:15:07]. So, again, the reason you're doing this is I want to be able to lift this stuff off, and push this bracket back. Be careful not to get any dust in those intakes. I'm gonna cover those up next. So, I've removed the upper intake, got that out. Next thing I wanna do is cover the intake openings. As we live in Arizona, it's a dry heat, which is also why I'm doing an open cold air intake versus the box. But there's a lot of dust and debris, even inside the engine bay here. So, first thing I'm gonna do is cover my openings. I've seen people use tape. I've got a little too much stuff on there that it probably won't stick, so I'm just gonna use either shop rags or paper towel to plug all those openings.Doing good. Keep them from getting any more dust and debris in there. Get those covered up. Now I can remove the foam on this side. And this is the driver's side. The three coil packs are here, here, and here. This procedure so far, well, everything we're doing will be the same to replace the plugs, which I'll also be doing. There's three bolts, and I believe these are 10. Yes, 10-millimeter. So, I got my socket ready for those. I'm gonna set this foam down out of the way, and get those out. If you're not replacing the coil packs, and just doing the spark plugs, when you take these off, try to keep them in line. Maybe just set them in a row, so you can just put them back to where it is. If you think you have a problem with a coil and you're doing the plugs, you could always reverse the one on this side and put it over here, where you won't have to remove the intake and everything we did to get to this side.So, I'm gonna go ahead and start taking these out. So, I'm gonna go...first, remove the clips so I don't break them on these. Let's see if I can just get it to move. There you go. Okay. And then we'll pull the...that's out [inaudible 00:18:33]. Get that one loose. This middle one, there's a bracket in the way, I wasn't sure if we were gonna have to remove or not. If you have a swivel socket, I think you should be able to maneuver around it and leave it in place, which we are. So, I don't have to take that off. And the back one. Okay. I'm gonna go ahead and remove all three of coil packs on this side, replace the old factory coil packs with the MSD Blaster Series coil packs. Wiggle that in. They're kind of a suction. Once you get that in, start with the bolt in here and tighten it. The third one, I'll put in. They fit really nice. Good suction. Okay. And tighten these up. Just hand-tighten. Don't over-torque these. Make sure [inaudible 00:20:53] strip them out. Okay. These are good and tight.Go ahead and plug back in the clip, and you'll hear a little click when you've made a connection. And this, the driver's side's done, ready to cover up. We're gonna go to the, back to the passenger side now, and repeat the same process. This side's a little bit harder to reach. So, I'm gonna remove the factory clips on this. I've seen a couple of videos and suggestions that this center one, it's easier to remove the bolt and pry it out, and you get a little bit of slack on that so you can get to it. On the other two, you can just get them with your fingernail thumb and get them off, and... Wait. Okay. Back one, and front. Okay. And this middle one, let's see. Okay. Get the hose out. Oh, I got it. We're ready to put the coil packs in on the passenger's side. I'm gonna start with the middle one, and show you on that harness. So, I think it's a little bit easier to start it, plug it in, and then get it all the way in, because you got very little room to work with on that. So, I'll start the hose, and then get that clip until you here it click. And then this, and closest to the end.Start those. I'll come back and tighten those a little bit. Okay. And the back one. This hose, you gotta work underneath. In. Okay. Got that. That one's good. And that one's good. Okay. That's it. And there's the six coil packs back, done, and clips are on. Now I'll clean it up a little bit, and then get ready to put everything back together. Okay. We've finished the coil packs, plugs, and cleaned up. Everything you can see here is in the order I'm gonna put it back. I've installed the new BBK throttle body spacer, and then, in place of the factory air box and intake, I'll be doing the cold air intake as I put it back together. We're ready to go. Okay. I'm gonna wedge this back in, like I took it out. Get this intake in, underneath that clip, which holds the AC harness. And then pull up. This'll go back. And on this side, you can get those bolts through those two brackets. Got our four bolts in. Looks like everything's in place. Put that bracket over that tab, and now we're ready to put everything back on.When we tighten the bolts, I'll put them back, maybe start with the corner, and then kitty-corner and tighten them all the way back and forth, all the way to the front. May be a good idea just to go ahead and hand-start all of them, so you can see locations. There we go. These four short ones, and the three on the top. Just gonna hand-tighten these, but... Okay. Okay. So, we'll tighten these back. Put on the four nuts. Okay. As we're wrapping up on this side, another thing, a good idea, just go ahead and start putting your hoses back on, and the clips can go back on. We're done on this side. This one goes here. That plug, I'm not gonna plug in yet, but I'm gonna go ahead and put all the clips back. This one here. And then this one, since I've replaced the...put the new throttle body spacer, there's nowhere for that to plug into this one, which shouldn't affect it. But you want to make sure it will reach the new [inaudible 00:30:25] aftermarket throttle, and it does.So, I'll go ahead and now plug that in. Okay. That plugs in. We'll put this one in now. And we're ready to put the air box. This clip...I'll have to lift back the AC lines, put those back on. And if you have that screwdriver, something to pry this out of the way. Okay. I have the aftermarket cold air intake, the clamps put on, the hoses. I'm gonna plug this sensor back, underneath. And then I have the stuff in the back. Put it back on, get it in there. Yeah. Then get these on. That's ready. Okay. I have everything ready for this. [inaudible 00:33:47] back over here, all my pieces are done except for the factory air box.
