Eric: Hey, guys, Eric with ExtremeTerrain. Today we're checking out this Pair of LED Tail Lights with the Chrome Housing and Red and Clear Lens, fitting all 1976 to 2006 Jeep Wranglers. That's right. These lights will fit any CJ5, CJ7, YJ, or TJ generation Wrangler, and they're really ideal for those Wrangler owners who are looking to replace their faded, old halogen bulb tail lights. You're really gonna see a stark contrast with these lights. They are much brighter, and the housings on them are nice, clean, and clear. It's gonna give you much better visibility out there on the road, and it's gonna be a nice style upgrade as well. So, like I said, it's a pretty stark contrast. You're really gonna notice during the demonstration of these lights in this video that everything from the reverse lights to the tail lights and brake lights are just much, much brighter, and even the license plate lighting that's on the underside of both lights is gonna give a lot more light output. And these are obviously DOT and SAE compliant, so they are legal for road use in all 50 states. Now, the housings with these lights, you can either put in an optional red lens right here that covers the tail light and brake light portion of the light, or you can leave it clear like we have it, all depends on your personal styling taste. The way we have it set up right now is really for maximum brightness and really provides the most stark contrast compared to your factory tail light.Coming in right around $150, it really is a pretty affordable way to dress up the styling of your Jeep, especially if you have a much older model. And even our 1997 TJ that we're working on here today, the tail lights were pretty faded and pretty worn out, and these really dress up their rear end quite nicely. Now, as far as the installation goes, guys, I'm giving it a very solid one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. If you've never done electrical work before, pay attention to the steps we're about to show you because, really, that is the trickiest part of this installation is wiring these lights into the factory wiring harness on your Jeep. This is not a plug-and-play installation, so there is some raw wiring work that we're gonna be doing, but I'm gonna show you how to do that. And you can either use the clips that are included in the kit or use some optional ones that I'm gonna show you, give you a couple of options. I personally think the way I'm about to show you is a little bit easier, but it's up to you how you wanna go about it. Give yourself about one hour to get this job done from start to finish, and you'll have your Jeep dressed up and well-lit in no time. All right. So let's take a look at the tools you're gonna need for this installation. All right, guys. Tools you're gonna need for this installation include electric impact wrench, 6-inch extension, 10 and 11-millimeter sockets, a Phillips head screwdriver, a crimper wire stripping tool, a pair of needle-nose pliers, a hammer, a heat gun, and a circuit tester. All right. First, we're gonna show you a clip of how to remove your factory tail lights, and then I'll be back to show you how I got these new tail lights installed.Woman: So the first step in our uninstall is to remove the four Phillips head screws at each corner of our tail light. Next up, using a 10-millimeter socket, remove the three bolts on the inside of your tail light. Pull the wiring harness forward to reveal the connector. Press back on the connector and release it.Eric: All right, guys. The first step with our new tail light here is we're gonna knock out the holes here. These are just little perforated knockout tabs, and we're gonna knock them out in the pattern that we're gonna run the bolts through to mount it to the back of the Jeep. And it should be like a triangle pattern here. Just grab one of the bolts from the kit and a hammer, and it should tap out just like that. All right, guys. Now, what we're looking at here is the wiring that is on our new tail light here, as well as a resistor box. What we're gonna do is we're gonna splice some connectors onto this wiring, and we're gonna use these T-tap connectors. These are really easy to use. There are a number of ways you could do this wiring, but these T-tap connectors are really easy to use. Basically, what you're gonna need to do, you're going to need to identify which wires in your Jeep's wiring harness or your reverse light, your running light, and your brake, and turn signal. And that's what we're gonna connect into. The wiring harness on your Jeep, the plug that basically your tail light plugs into has four wires running into it, and one of them is a redundant wire. You're gonna have to identify which activations go to which using like a circuit tester. Once you've done that, figure out which of the three wires you need to tap into. We're gonna be using these. So, in order to connect to these T-tap connectors, once this goes over the wire...and this is gonna go over the wire that's on the Jeep's wiring harness. This will go on the end of each one of these wires, and this plug will then plug into the factory wiring harness, like that. And that's how we're gonna make our connection. So basically, we just need to attach these to the ends of these wires here. So I have some heat shrink. I'm gonna start on each one of these wires. So we're gonna insert this in here. Make sure you have some wire exposed. And with these type of connectors, you basically crimp it on there. You're gonna need like a crimping tool. You could use a needle-nose pliers possibly as long as you have a good crimp. And just kind of test it by giving it a tug. If it doesn't pull off, then you have a nice crimp on there. And then we'll just slide the heat shrink down over it, like that, and we'll heat that up in just a second after we do these other ones. You see that one. The wire came out a little bit, so we didn't have a good crimp there. Insert it back in and give it another squeeze. All right. Now one's on there. All right, guys. Now, the blue wire also has to connect to our yellow wire. So we're going to use one of these clips. This basically allows you to splice two wires together as they're kind of oriented parallel to each other. Now, this inner passage here, you can't pass all the way through. So we'll use the blue wire in there. Push it in as far as it goes. In our yellow wire here, we'll just snap in the outer channel, like that, and making sure that the blue wire is still in all the way. And there we splice the two wires together. All right, guys. So we're looking at our wiring, what we've accomplished so far, making our connections down here, and splicing our black wire here on our resistor box. So what we need to do next, according to the manufacturer, is you need to run a ground wire. So you're gonna have to source your own length of wire, and we have that right here. What we're gonna do is we're gonna feed that in through the eyelet down here on the bottom of the light where the wiring already comes through that the manufacturer put in there. So, we're gonna feed this new wire we have down through the sheathing, and you're probably gonna wanna cut this back a little bit just to make it easy so you're not trying to fish a length of wire through about a foot-long worth of this rubber sheath right here. So, we're gonna fish this through, and then we're gonna create connections, one on the end that's going to stay inside the light. And we're gonna use one of these connectors here so that inside when we bolt...put the bolts in that are gonna attach the light to the Jeep, one of those bolts is gonna go through this, and it's gonna ground this wire to the metal plate there. And then the other end of this ground wire is going to come out, and we're going to use a butt connector to connect these two lengths here. So let's go ahead and get started. All right. Now, this is what's called a butt connector, guys, and basically, what it's meant to do is to take two stripped ends of wire and make a connection. Once we get these in, we can crimp it down and heat shrink it. It should make a nice solid connection for us. So, here's the end of the ground wire that we just fished through the opening in the light. I'm gonna crimp it down. I'm gonna give a little tug, and then push this end through. All right. Now we'll heat shrink it. All right. Now, for the end of the ground wire that's gonna be inside the light itself, I like to strip back enough of the wire that I can fold it over, give it a nice kind of a thicker end to it here so that when we put our connector on, it has a nice sizeable bit of wire there to crimp down on. Tug it. Okay. Now we're gonna shrink it.All right, guys. Now, what you're looking at, inside the light there, you can see we already have a bolt started right there, and it's going through that eyelet at the end of the ground wire that we just put together. So, that's the first bolt we're gonna start, and we're gonna line it up here in the Jeep, and get that bolt started. And then we'll do some more wiring and get this thing all mounted up. All right, guys. Now we're gonna feed our wiring through the hole right here. All right, guys. Now, I have a 6-inch extension and 11-millimeter socket that we're gonna use to tighten this bolt down. So I'm gonna get that started in there. That will help hold the bolt in. Now we get the other bolts. All right, guys. Now we're gonna close up our light here using the screws supplied in the kit.All right, guys. Now, here we're looking at the wiring harness that is attached to the Jeep. And one quick and easy way to figure out which of these wires you're gonna end up using for this install is look at the clip on your factory that's attached to your factory tail light that plugs in here. Now, ours only had three wires connecting in here. There was no wire on the tail light end that plugged into this. So we already know based on that that we're not gonna have to tap into, basically, on our Jeep, this wire right here because our factory tail light wasn't even using it. So, we're only gonna be dealing with these three wires. And using your circuit tester, you go ahead and identify what each of these wires does, and then that corresponds to what wire from our new tail light we're gonna plug in here. So, as you can see, I've already got our T-tap connectors pinched on, and we've identified it. And our red wire, which is for the reverse light on our new tail light, plugs into our purple and black wire here. Now, I'll throw this out kind of as like a disclaimer kind of thing. The coloring of your wiring may be different. It might be the same. But that's why you're gonna have to use a circuit tester that you would attach inside here. You just kind of put the probe in there, and then have somebody in the driver's seat of your Jeep doing what you need them to do, pushing on the brake pedal, turning on the running lights, turning on the turn signal, that kind of thing. So, as they do each of those things, then each of these wires will get power when they do those things in the cabin of your Jeep. So, push these on. Now, as you can see these connectors here, you can see the metal spade in there that's actually gonna make the connection. You wanna check this when you push it in to make sure that you can't see it. If you can see that spade, that means it didn't go into the sleeve, and you're not gonna have a good connection. So go ahead. Once you get it seated in there pretty well, check both sides. If you can't see it, that's good.Next up, we're going to put our brown wire onto the yellow and black wire, and that serves as power for our tail light or running light feature. And then our last connector here, the yellow wire, is going to plug into our brown and red wire, and that functions...that powers our turn signal and brake light. So once you have those all connected, I'd recommend bundling it together, securing it with some zip ties, and finding a location up in here that you can secure this. You do have the option of using the adhesive backing on your resistor box here. This isn't a permanent installation, our TJ here today. We're just doing this install for demonstration purposes. So I'm not gonna permanently mount it in here, but I definitely wanna secure this. And also maybe give some extra wraps of electrical tape over your connections just to make sure everything's nice and sturdy and can withstand the punishment of being bounced around on your TJ. All right, guys. Now we have a reflector with an adhesive backing we're gonna put on the side here just for a little bit of extra visibility. Now, these kits also come with an optional red lens that you can attach here. The LED lights themselves inside the housing are red, and we're leaving this cover off because we think it provides a bigger contrast in what you're about to see with the factory fog light or with the factory tail light. So, you can insert this if you want, and you would do that before you put the overall lens on with the screws, you put this on there. But we're gonna leave it off and show you that way.All right, guys. Now we have our factory tail light off of our Jeep. I wanna throw it up here on the table and give you a quick side-by-side comparison. Now, obviously, our Jeep here is pushing 24, 25-years-old, so plastic bits on it, including our tail lights here, is starting to look a little weathered, a little faded, and a little bit worse for wear. And you compare that to the new unit here, it's nice, crisp clean, and that's just the outward cosmetics. Once you power these new lights up, you are going to see a dramatic difference. Every bit about this light, whether it's the reverse lights, the license plate lights, or the turn signal brake lights, they're all much, much brighter than what you have on your factory light. Now, we're showing you here with the optional red lens over the brake light portion, you can take that off. The LEDs inside are actually red themselves. And for demonstration purposes, we're going to leave the lens off, and that's gonna give you a much brighter comparison and really a stark contrast to our factory light. So other than that, the overall dimensions and everything are pretty much the same. It's just you're going to notice that much more intense light coming from your new lights that we're mounting on the Jeep. So let's go ahead and continue with the installation. So go ahead and repeat all the same steps, so we just demonstrated here on the passenger side, to get your driver's side tail light installed, and that pretty much wraps up this review and install of these LED Tail Lights with the Chrome Housing and the Red and Clear Lens, fitting all 1976 to 2006 Jeep Wranglers. And, of course, for all things Wrangler, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
