      Video Review & Installation

Hey, guys, I'm Eric with Extreme Terrain. In this video, I'm gonna give you my review and install of these HDX Xtreme Nerf Side Step Bars in texture black for all 2020 and later Jeep Gladiators. And you should really be checking these out if you're looking for a more modern design solution to get in and out of your gladiator a lot easier. Now, getting in and of our Jeeps is a tall enough task, even in their stock configuration. And if you're like most Jeep owners, you've probably already added larger tires and/or a lift to your Gladiator or you plan on doing that in the near future. With that, you're gonna be adding a lot of height to your truck. So you're gonna be looking for a solution to get in and out of your truck a lot easier. Now, these HDX Xtreme Side Steps with their modular design look good on any Jeep, but the particular lines and texture black finish, I think pair up especially well with the black fenders on the sport model gladiators. Now, the width of these particular side steps offer a couple of advantages. First off, you have these nice wide stepping surfaces that have a deep tread to them. That's gonna give you good traction getting in and out of your Jeep, regardless of the conditions you're in, whether you're in mud, snow, or rain. The other advantage you're gonna get is you're gonna have more protection for that exposed rocker panel area. Now, particularly if you have a Sport model Jeep like we're working on here today, that usually comes from the factory without anything mounted down there. And that's gonna leave that area at the bottom here, what we call the rocker panel, exposed to flying debris, rock chips, and that kind of thing whether you're driving down a gravel or a dirt road or down the interstate. And every one of those chips can be a source of future corrosion, something we obviously wanna avoid. Now, these side steps here are gonna help protect that vulnerable area against that kind of damage. Now, as far as price goes, these are currently priced right around $625. That does put it towards the upper end of the spectrum compared to a lot of other side steps out there. It's not the most expensive. However, you are getting very solid steel construction with this. It makes them a little bit heavier, but they are very rugged and durable once you get them mounted on. Now, speaking of getting them mounted on, the installation I'm giving a very soft two out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Typically, we give side steps I believe a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. However, these take a little bit of adjusting and they're slightly different in their design with the mounting brackets and how you pair up the side step with those brackets. Overall, I would budget about two hours to get this job done from start to finish. Now, in reviewing some of the customer feedback and preparation for doing this video, I did note several customer comments regarding some mislabeling of brackets and some other challenges they had during the installation. We did not experience that with the product we were working with today. However, I do recommend that once you unbox your side steps and all the brackets, make sure everything fits properly before you start putting both bolts into things and you get halfway through the installation and you start having problems. The other recommendation I have for your installation is that we are gonna be putting bolts into the underside of your Jeep. There are threaded holes and mounting points that are there from the factory. Now, if you haven't put anything on there previously, and you've got several miles and some hard use on your truck already, you might have some dirt, debris, or maybe even some corrosion starting up in those threaded holes. I highly recommend cleaning them out, making sure you don't have any of that in there that's gonna cause you to cross a thread. And that is gonna cause you to take a relatively easy installation and all of a sudden it's gonna be a real headache for you. So I highly recommend cleaning those out. That said, this is pretty much a direct bolt-up installation using the factory mounting points, some basic hand tools I'm gonna show you in a second. So why don't we go ahead and do that and move forward with the installation? All right, guys, the tools we're gonna use for this install are electric impact wrench, an extension, a 13-mil socket, a hand socket wrench, 10 and 13-mil crescent wrenches, and 10 and 13-millimeter ratcheting wrenches. All right, guys, we're about ready to get started on our installation. Just wanted to talk about our brackets that we're gonna be using here for just a second. You're gonna be able to know where you're gonna mount these brackets based on how they're stamped. Now, on the driver's side, they're all gonna stamped with DF, DC, or DR for driver front, driver center, or driver rear. And then obviously on the passenger's side, it'll be PF, PC, and PR. So that will tell you where we're gonna go.Now, if you look at the mounting points on your Jeep, there are pairs of holes here in the pinch welds and there's four pairs. We're gonna be using the first one, the second one, skipping the third, and then using the fourth, which is all the way at the back. Those are factory mounting points. That's what's great about this kit. It's gonna be an easy bolt-up installation. Just make sure that before you go putting a bolt in on the underside, I'm gonna show you this spot in the second, make sure that's cleaned out, free of any corrosion or dirt or other debris that could cause you to cross your threads and all of a sudden an easy installation becomes a difficult one.So let's go ahead. We're gonna mount up some of these brackets. The other brackets we're gonna use are all shaped like this. They're all the same. They're gonna be stamped D or P for driver's side or passenger side. So once you know what side of the truck you're on, it doesn't matter what spot you use them in on that side. They're all the same in that respect. So let's go ahead and start bolting these up. All right, now to mount this on first, we're gonna mount this bracket here. Go ahead and grab these black carriage bolts out of there. They're the kind that have this kind of rounded top and then the square underneath. That's gonna fit in here and prevent it from turning as we put the nut on. So go ahead and start that in there like that. And then on the backside, you're gonna fit on a washer, block washer, and a nut. And we're just gonna leave it somewhat loose and finger-tight at this point. Now go ahead and take the bracket marked DF, and we're gonna bolt it up to the underside of the Jeep. Okay, just slide your bracket up. We're gonna put it on this side, the rear side of this, just kind of cinch that up snug, finger-snug right now. And while we're under here, go ahead and grab a 10-millimeter wrench. I'm gonna use a 10-millimeter ratcheting wrench and tighten these bolts down. Okay. All right. Now we're gonna move down to the other positions. All right. We can tighten up this bracket here, these bolts. I'm gonna use a 10-millimeter socket for these back here. All right, guys. Now, the next step is we need to insert a bolt here. It's gonna connect this bracket to the bracket here. And to do that, go ahead and grab these bolts out of your kit, and a couple of washers, a lock washer, and a nut. And then to tighten them down, we'll use a 13-millimeter crescent on the bolt and a 13-mil socket for the nut. And then repeat that on down the line. All right, now we need to go underneath and tighten up the bolt that we bolted up into the underside of the Jeep. All right, now we're on the underside of the Jeep we're looking straight up here at the underside bracket where we're bolting directly into the body of the Jeep. That's a 13-mil socket for all these bolts as well. All right, guys, now I have our driver's side step up here on the table. Next thing you need to do is grab a couple more of these bolts with a flat washer and a lock washer, and just start them in the hole. And just a few threads because we're gonna end up sliding this onto the bracket to hold it in place. So we need to leave it loose so we can get that on there. And then once it's on there, we can tighten it down. So we have this one and then the one further up.All right, guys, now I have the step down here. I have one end underneath or on top of a box, kind of showing you how he can do this if you're working by yourself. Obviously, if you have a second set of hands, that's gonna be a little bit helpful, but we're gonna lift our step up on here and those bolts that we just threaded into the holes gonna slide in right here. And it's gonna rest up on top of this bracket. So once we get this up here, then we'll have a couple of bolts up at the front end and we'll tighten these down as well. But right now let's get it up into place. All right, guys, now, up here, I'm at the front end underneath the driver's seat and these two nuts are welded permanently to the bracket on the side step. Go ahead and grab two of these bolts. These are shorter than all the other bolts that we've been using that look like this. There are the two short ones that are in your kit, a flat washer, and a lock washer. We're just gonna thread these in and I'll tighten them down here in a second. And these use a 13 millimeter as well. All right, guys, now we're gonna tighten up these bolts, got this one here at the middle and then one at the back. It's kind of tight in here, unfortunately, so we're gonna have to use a crescent wrench, a 13 millimeter. All right, then go ahead and repeat that in the back. All right, next up, we have a couple of bolts we're gonna put on the underside of these brackets. All right. So we grab another bolt, flat washer, and lock washer, and there's a threaded hole on the underside of the side step. And again, it's a 13 millimeter. Right. Now, there's another one here under the middle bracket.Okay, guys, that wraps up this review and install of these HDX Xtreme Nerf Side Step Bars in texture black for all 2020 and later Jeep Gladiators. And of course, for all things Gladiator, keep it right here extremeterrain.com.
